TXS Core Value #1 - FUN
Nothing brings more joy to parents than to know their children our happy and having fun.. When I founded TeamX Sports back in 2006 I did so with several core values in mind, but fun was at the top of the list.
Research after research says that the number one reason kids play sports is to have fun. And, conversely 70% of kids say the number one reason they quit playing sports is that it ceases to be fun. Interestingly, winning does not even crack the top five. This is usually the domain of parents and coaches.
What are some ways that TeamX strives to create fun for kids? One way is to encourage our coaches to deemphasize the importance of winning. Certainly winning is fun. Everyone loves to win. And we encourage kids to try their hardest to win, but there's a subtle difference between winning as the top priority and working hard, putting forth effort, and experiencing winning as the by-product. If our focus is on the character development of the child, winning will take care of itself.
Here's a tip for you
- Instead of your first question "did you win?" Try asking "did you have fun today." Or, tell me about a time in the game that you took a risk or persevered, or showed sportsmanship. These types of exchanges will prove invaluable to your child because they will begin to see that you value their fun and their character development as more important than winning. If our focus is always about the win, and winning is not their experience, a child can begin to feel shame. If you shift the focus you will be helping them to develop the very internal processing they need for a healthy sense of self while maximizing their opportunities to enjoy sports.
How else do we promote fun? Letting kids play with their friends. More on this later..
